The White Mask, part of the War Surgeon set, is one of the most sought-after armor pieces in Elden Ring due to its passive damage boost for hemorrhage-based builds. Acquiring this iconic piece of equipment requires navigating the storyline of White Mask Varré and reaching the hidden realm of Mohgwyn Palace. This complete guide outlines every step needed to unlock the armor and secure this essential gear.
Starting Varré's Questline in Limgrave and Liurnia
Your journey begins at The First Step Site of Grace in Limgrave, where you initially encounter White Mask Varré. After defeating Godrick the Grafted and visiting the Two Fingers at Roundtable Hold, Varré relocates to the Rose Church in Liurnia of the Lakes. Speaking with him here advances his quest, leading to tasks that require invading other worlds or defeating specific NPC invaders.
Soaking the Lord of Blood's Favor
After completing the required invasions, Varré gifts you the Lord of Blood's Favor and requests that you soak it in the blood of a maiden. You can accomplish this by traveling to the Church of Inhibition in northeastern Liurnia or visiting the Chapel of Anticipation. Returning the blood-soaked cloth to Varré rewards you with the Pureblood Knight's Medal, which acts as a direct portal to Mohgwyn Palace.
Defeating the Nameless White Mask Invaders
Once you arrive at Mohgwyn Palace, travel toward the bloody lake area near the Palace Approach Ledge-Road Site of Grace. In this area, you will be invaded by up to three Nameless White Mask NPCs. Defeating the specific invader located near the giant crow enemy will drop the full War Surgeon set, including the coveted White Mask.
Optimizing the White Mask Combat Potential
The White Mask grants a ten percent increase to attack power for twenty seconds whenever Blood Loss occurs nearby. Combining this helm with weapons like Rivers of Blood or Lord of Blood's Exultation creates a formidable combat strategy. Ensuring you defeat the invaders before slaying Mohg, Lord of Blood is critical, as beating the area boss prevents these NPC invasions from spawning.
